How it works

Cost per mile allocates the carrier’s actual cost budget across all miles driven. Costs and distance must cover the same week, month, quarter or year.

The formula

Total cost = fixed costs + variable costs Cost per mile = total period costs ÷ total period miles Fixed CPM = fixed costs ÷ miles Variable CPM = variable costs ÷ miles

Keep currency, units and time periods consistent. Percentage inputs use percentage points (enter 5 for 5%). Results are rounded only for display; tiny nonzero values may use scientific notation. Undefined ratios are shown as unavailable.

Worked example

$8,000 fuel + $2,200 maintenance/tires + $1,200 insurance + $2,200 truck payment + $5,500 labor + $900 other costs = $20,000. Across 10,000 miles, operating CPM is $2.00.

Calculation method

The itemized model classifies truck payments, insurance, permits, software and other fixed costs as fixed. Fuel, maintenance, tires, labor, fee/admin charges and other variable costs are variable. Reclassify through the other-cost fields when your arrangement differs.

Interpretation

The total-cost mode cannot infer a fixed/variable split. Mileage scenarios hold period costs unchanged to show allocation effects; a real change in mileage may also change fuel and other variable costs.

Limitations

Use your own carrier costs, fee agreements and approved revenue. These are planning estimates, not booking recommendations or guarantees. Inputs stay in your browser; no trip or settlement figures are saved.

Using this in a dispatch decision

Match the expense period to the mileage period. Monthly expenses divided by one week of miles exaggerate cost per mile. Include empty miles in the denominator when the budget pays for those miles, and do not enter a total expense again in itemized costs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix annual costs with monthly miles?

No. Costs and miles must cover the same period. Convert them to a common period so fixed-cost allocation is meaningful.

What is a worked example for Trucking Cost Per Mile?

$8,000 fuel + $2,200 maintenance/tires + $1,200 insurance + $2,200 truck payment + $5,500 labor + $900 other costs = $20,000. Across 10,000 miles, operating CPM is $2.00.
